That works on the Linux kernels that I have attempted. I'm wondering
what's not happening for you?

Can you also show 'stat startTimidity' before and after the failing
attempt at 'touch -m startTimidity'?
Also, if you built coreutils from source, running 'make -C gnulib-tests
check' would be informative.
