I should add that this linked 
/home/install/gnu/sun4_solaris/lib/libintl.so which should be GNU 
gettext 0.14.5 without GNU libiconv; maybe that's the problem?

I've tried unsuccessfully to build 0.17: 
http://permalink.gmane.org/gmane.comp.gnu.utils.bugs/16183

(...and no one has responded to the above, so if anyone in the audience 
knows gettext, help would be appreciated.)
