The concept of unambiguous abbreviations for long options is relatively
universal across programs that take long options, and it is not worth
cluttering up the man pages (basically the --help output, which strives to
be concise) with repeating this detail.  But it was recently added to the
info pages to make this feature more apparent (it will be available in the
next release of coreutils).
