What distribution are you using (I'm guessing Fedora 10).
Distributions that patch coreutils really should
modify the version string accordingly.

Anyway thanks for your thorough tests.
I'll look at merging them into the upstream tests.

I verified the same issues were present on Fedora 8.
However unexpand works as you expected if you do:

  export LANG=C

I.E. this seems to be more fallout from the i18n
patch applied by your distro.
