In general, the GNUWin32 port of coreutils is notoriously out-of-date.  I
would recommend trying a newer port.  For example, try cygwin.com, which
provides a single directory space for all mounted drives, and which does
not have the problem you appear to be describing.  But whichever port you
try, this list does not have much experience with Windows, and you may be
better off asking your questions about Windows ports of coreutils at the
place where you download the precompiled applications.
