Actually, I'm getting the same behavior on my i686 Ubuntu 6.10.1 install.

Note that the "mips" bit is probably the output from uname -m, not uname 
-p; uname -a lists "print  all  information,  in the following order, 
except omit -p and -i if unknown."

Still, given that /proc/cpuinfo has useful info, perhaps -p shouldn't be 
"unknown"?
