Time for an upgrade! fileutils was consumed by coreutils, and this bug no longer exists in coreutils 6.7 (the latest stable version), at least, if your system supports openat(2) or /proc/self/fd/.
Maybe we should attach a vacation reply to address@hidden since everybody I remember emailing that address in the last couple of years just needed to upgrade to a recent version of coreutils. James.
