Sorry, I still don't quite follow (it is a tricky area), but that code
has changed quite a bit since the old version that you're referring
to, so perhaps the point would be different now.  You can take a look
yourself, if you like:

cvs -z3 -d address@hidden/cvsroot/coreutils co coreutils
