Wait a second.  HPP's ANSI C compiler isn't called "gcc", surely.

Perhaps you configured with one compiler and built with another?
That wouldn't work.

How about if you try building with a fresh copy of the distribution,
and (if the problem persists) show exactly how you configure and build
it, and what the outputs are?  It's OK to send us voluminous outputs
of "configure" and "make".
