Anyway, I think Jim's suggestion of adding a general-purpose format
argument is the right way to go in the long run.

Yes, I'd have to agree. I assume he means something along the lines of:

--format="%m %l %u %g %s %t %n"

whereby one can adjust the column arrangement and spacing as desired.

That'd be quite spiffy.
