coreutils-5.1.1 with patch for paste.c build feedback report

Subject: coreutils-5.1.1 with patch for paste.c build feedback report

I applied the patch for paste.c to the coreutils-5.1.1 distribution,
and named the new one coreutils-5.1.1.p01.

On 11 attempts, the build almost completed, but then stopped like
this:

WARNING: `help2man' is missing on your system. You should only need it
if
you modified a dependency of a manual page. You may need the
`Help2man' package in order for those modifications to take
effect. You can get `Help2man' from any GNU archive site.
        make[2]: *** [paste.1] Error 1
        make[1]: *** [all-recursive] Error 1
        make: *** [all] Error 2

That prevented "make check" from running. I thought that we had
already fixed the problem with a missing help2man in a recent
coreutils release.

On 5 January 2004, I tried installing the latest help2man-1.33.1 on
all local systems, but every single build failed with this complaint
from the configure stage:

        checking for module Locale::gettext... no
configure: error: perl module Locale::gettext required
Command exited with non-zero status 1

Perhaps earlier versions will work; I'm starting some builds to find
out.

On DEC Alpha OSF/1 4.0, I got one test failure:

        Machinetype: DEC Alpha 4100-5/466 (4 CPUs, 466 MHz, 2GB
RAM); OSF/1 4.0F
Remote cc version: DEC C V5.9-005 on Digital UNIX V4.0 (Rev. 1229)
        Package: coreutils-5.1.1.p01
        Configure environment: CC=cc CXX=cxx LDFLAGS=-Wl,-rpath,/usr/local/lib
        ...
        make check-TESTS
        make[3]: Entering directory

        FAIL: relative

It seemed minor, so I did the install anyway. The same test failure
happened on other builds on that system.

Several builds are still in progress; I'll report later if there
are any new problems beyond those noted above.
