[Bug swing/31091] New: JFileChooser layout and usability issues

Subject: [Bug swing/31091] New: JFileChooser layout and usability issues
Date: 8 Mar 2007 20:40:50 -0000

Chris Burdess commented on my blog about some problems we have in JFileChooser.

The original comment was about the Save dialog, but the issues can be seen
(obviously) in the Open dialog as well.

I'll copy his comment in this bug report, and attach a screenshot to better
focus on some of the problems.

---------------

OK, I'll bite.

I see a number of problems with the save dialog.

1. It's not clear which component is selected. If I press the Up cursor key, do
I go to the previous item in the Save In choice, or to the work_space file
item?

2. The height of the Save In choice is different from the height of the toolbar
buttons.

3. The height of the Save In choice is different from the height of the Files
Of Type choice.

4. The height of the Files Of Type choice is drastically different from the
height of the File Name textfield.

5. the Files of Type choice and File Name textfield are not aligned
horizontally with one another.

6. the File Name textfield is not horizontally aligned with the file item
scrollable view.

7. The Files Of Type choice is not horizontally aligned with the Save and
Cancel buttons.

8. There is no indication as to what the default button on the form is. What
happens when I hit Enter on the keyboard? Does it Save or does it Cancel?

9. and finally, the scrollable view containing the file items should either be
scrollable horizontally OR vertically, but definitely not both.

There you can find some additional screenshots.

Thanks to Chris Burdess for noticing this.
