I misread comment #2.  So you have reproduced the problem building with gcc.   

Anyway, I have a breakthrough.  You are running these tests on a 32-bit host,
are you not ?  I was using a 64-bit host and that is why I could not reproduce
the problem.

Now that I have tried using a 32-bit build, I can make the problem happen, and
I have found a fix.  I am running local regression tests now, but I hope to
commit a patch soon.
