bash removes the surrounding space in these cases (all other shells
print `< X >'):

    IFS=; set -- X
    printf "<%s>" ${0+ "$@" }
    <X>
    printf "<%s>" ${0+ $@ }
    <X>
    printf "<%s>" ${0+ $* }
    <X>
