A nasty bug in bash with special file names

I was playing around with a java build tool and accidently created a
directory called ${build.dir}.  When I tried to cd into this directory
doing cd *build.dir* bash locked up and started spitting the error "bad
substitution" until I killed it from another terminal

Here's my system info
Linux  2.2.14-5.0  i586 unknown

and Bash version
bash 1.14.7(1)
