Automake's default mode of operation is GNU mode, so replacing COPYING
is definitely OK then. For a non-GNU project, you will probably want
to use "foreign" mode. Either use --foreign when calling automake, or
add the word "foreign" to the AUTOMAKE_OPTIONS variable in your
Makefile.am.
