Thanks for the report. However, autoconf 2.53 is QUITE old. Many of the
failures look like they are merely testsuite bugs, where you are running
such a new version of m4 compared to when 2.53 was released that the
testsuite wasn't expecting the change in m4's output. Rather than focus
on any of these failures, you are probably much better off upgrading; the
latest version is 2.62.
