You can ask the user to run;
eval `(locale) 2>/dev/null | sed 's/^/AC_ORIGINAL_/'` configure
but admittedly this is a hack.
Autoconf could be modified to squirrel away the previous version of
LC_LANG etc. into separate variables like AC_ORIGINAL_LC_LANG. But
that won't help you with older Autoconf releases.
