I don't have a problem with falling back to this solution if noatime is
in fact not updated, but the question is how to detect it. What do you
think?
I wouldn't want to default to your solution however, because that would
break the mail indication for mailers who use $MAIL for storage. But if
you can find out how to detect your noatime setting, I'm all for your
plan B.
