Okay, I'll research this some more. It could be that the space thing
is a result of a workaround fix in Emacs 22. I don't know why it's not
working for me, for values >= 1 of `echo-keystrokes'.

What version of Emacs are you using? I have emacs-snapshot-gtk on
Debian testing:

    GNU Emacs (i486-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.8.20) of
    2007-02-08 on pacem, modified by Debian
