   g++ was the culprit.

   Now, I am able to resolve some package dependencies and I am able to succeed 
in configure.  Configuration is

Configuration:
NLS:                      yes
Equalizer:                no                                                    
       <-- Is this ok?
NVIDIA Quadro SDI output: no
liblircclient:            yes

make,  make install succeeded.

Do you have g++ installed? On Ubuntu, it's often sufficient to install 
'build-essential' package.
