Actually I'd be happy to have the option to go back to the fixed UI and have
docking as a later feature.

On a big screen it is useful to be able to layout the windows as one
wishes.
I have a small 12 inch screen and only a few windows fit on that screen
at any time.
When windows tend to remain hidden behind other ones, I would recommend
to use more Desktops on Linux. One switches from one desktop to another
by the keyboard accelerators Ctrl-Alt-Left(Right) Arrow.
Another option of resolving hidden windows is to have all presented when
the user clicks in one. This functionality was there in the beginning,
that is, a couple of months ago, but was removed because it was not
perfected yet.
About dockable windows, it seems that this is possible in Gtk+ through
the GDL library.
