Thanks for your report.

Most of these are known issues with the current official release of
Axiom.  They are being worked on.  

Configure has been improved to detect the various bits and communicate
with the C compiler and linker.  The LaTeX issue has also been
corrected.  I build Axiom on an x86_64 running SUSE linux 10.1 on
a daily basis.  If you're adventurous you might want to test the
build-improvements branch.
