fgrep returns -1 if it fails :-)
no, we hacked up this method and it worked.

there is no documentation because (a) documentation was considered
an afterthought for "the user" and (b) such a simple change wouldn't
be worth commenting on even if it was worth changing the code.

this goes to the very heart of my diatribes on literate programming.
the lesson is painful to put into practice on a daily basis, looking
like some horrible form of overkill and time-wasting  but glaringly 
obvious from a distance of years.
