I am sorry about that. That was a typo.
I meant:
the Makefile resides in:
/home/magnus/usr/source/axiom/cvs-040624/axiom
echo $AXIOM gives
/home/magnus/usr/source/axiom/cvs-040624/axiom/mnt/linux

I did rebuild from scratch using cvs sources in /tmp/axiom
pwd => /tmp/axiom
ls  => CHANGELOG  CVS  Makefile  Makefile.linux  Makefile.pamphlet  README     
     configure  int  license  lsp  mnt  noweb  obj  src  zips
echo $AXIOM => /tmp/axiom/mnt/linux
make

same error
....
The source file /tmp/axiom/int/interp/apply.clisp is not found.
