Can you give me a clue about where the latex proceses are started?

Latex hangs if you have a syntax error. It puts up a console prompt.
In order to minimize the amount of console noise the latex output
is put in a file called ${TMP}/trace 
In order to find the hung process you can run the build using
  make NOISE=

This is documented in the Makefile.dvi in the root directory (see
FAQ item number 4).
