Follow-up Comment #2, bug #34518 (project avrdude):

Well, r928 reverted the combined change from r851 and r880:

address@hidden 604% svn diff -r 816:928 fileio.c | wc
       0       0       0

All this was re-implemented in r929, so that's the specific
change to look at here.
