Excuse me, that's been nonsense.  The STK500v1 actually
works the way suggested.  I've been fooled by looking into
the wrong appnote (for the V2 protocol, where you indeed
can only read one byte per command).  :-o

So the only thing remaining is the backwards compatibility,
and I wouldn't want to risk breaking that, not even by
relying on a `command not understood' response.
