Details:
avrdude 5.0 access the parallel port before claiming it when opening the
port. Values that are read there are not proper, because ioctl(fd, PPGDATA,
...) fails, but it's not detected by the program.
There is a message from the kernel (kernel: ppdev0: claim the port first) at
avrdude startup.
