You can make avrdude to more verbose by adding more "-v" options. If 
you do enough (4, IIRC), it puts out every single byte send and 
received over serial port. So you can see, were it stops or gets out 
of sync.

What kind of RS232-interface does your programmer have (just some 
transistors or a MAX232)?
