Yes, that's still their biggest advantage.  Any cool idea about how to
inject that kind of debugging information into the ELF file so GDB
could offer something similar would be welcome.  (Ah, well, an AVR-GDB
maintainer would be even more welcome... ;-)

Probably, yes.  Alas, there are only very few people who really know
about the internals of AVR-GCC.
