Actually I did try gcc-20010409 and many other combinations, I am pretty
sure now that the problem is my system.  I tried building the same
combination of gcc and binutils that I have working on another machine
and building gcc fails with the error that it cant find avr-ar.  avr-ar
is in /usr/local/bin and was in the PATH before I make gcc but gets
removed from the PATH during make, that seems very strange to me.

What platform do you use?, SuSE 7.1 dose not seem to work for me.
