Have you seen

? Maybe try PKG_CHECK_MODULES_STATIC
or PKG_CONFIG="pkg-config --static"
Never heard of libzzip, I can see why you don't want to expect it to
be on the user's system already.
Is libpng a problem because its soname isn't the same everywhere yet?
