Automake 1.9.6 is very old. Presumably you're using an ancient version
of Autoconf too, please state which. Normally I'd say upgrade and
retry, but I might look at this if you post a small reproducer.
I had a closer look at my system and found the debian alternatives
system was pointing at an old version. I set it right now thanks.
