Typo? That would be DISTCHECK_CONFIGURE_FLAGS.
Ahhh, it is working due to this in my Makefile.am:
DISTCHECK_CONFIGURE_FLAGS=$(DISTCHECK_CONFIG_FLAGS)
The loop is now closed. :-)
