the fix is to use Automake conditional instead of @address@hidden
configure.ac (or configure.in) shall contain:
AM_CONDITIONAL([WANT_FOO], [certain condidtions])
and Makefile.am:
bin_PROGRAMS =
if WANT_FOO
bin_PROGRAMS += foo
endif
