Another issue is that of @FOO@ variable in bin_PROGRAMS etc.

I did this:
set -e
$AUTOMAKE -a
grep -c '^\.c\.o:' Makefile.in | grep '^1$'
grep -c '^\.c\.obj:' Makefile.in | grep '^1$'
exit 0
