FWIW, I slightly prefer that too.  Now I'm in the middle of cleaning up
the testuite on Solaris, but once that is done I might prepare a patch
for the conversion to a single top-level `.gitignore' file.  Unless
somebody wants to beat me at it, of course ;-)
