How long is that period?  Can it be changed?

As far as I understood before, NFS delays removal only for files that
still have an open fd into them.  I haven't dug though whether we hold
one in these cases, but it would explain reproducability.

Well, apart from those semantics being ugly, it can also eventually be a
space problem if there are many leftover files.
