Sorry. I was referring to the idea of using a .stamps directory to
store the time stamps that trigger the Makefile rule. For instance,
the stamp-h files for config.h, or stamp-vti for Texinfo.
I was suggesting that these guys be 1. rename to something more
intelligible (e.g., .stamps/config.h, .stamps/version.texi), and (2)
that the actual contents of these files be the actual contents of the
destination files instead of `date`.
Am I making more sense?
