configure complaint from a SGI O3k machine

Just a note to say that when I configure on a 1024-processor SGI 3k Origin
I get a strange error during the test for a GNU ld:

 % ./configure --prefix=/u/kleb/local

 checking whether the linker is GNU ld... cc ERROR:  -- not allowed in non XPG4 
environment
 cc ERROR parsing --print-prog-name=ld:  unknown flag
 cc ERROR:  no source or object file given
 no
 checking whether cc -E accepts -o... yes
 [..]

I'll forward more detailed information to anyone who wants to take a more
detailed look...
