Using Make-variables (e.g. $(DIET)) in $VPATH is non-portable,
error-prone and (somewhat) dangerous, nevertheless it should work with
gnu-make, if you know what you are doing.
IIRC, there is a section in autoconf.info or automake.info which
decribes the details.
