I'm afraid this path leads to complex solutions where people will
spend even more time on Autoconf matters instead of hacking their
packages :(

| timing constrants there are for the automake 1.7 release, but if we
| can come to a consensus on what changes are needed, I'd be more than
| willing to put in the time and effort to implement them for 2.54.

That's great.  Then, let's disable this, and release 2.54 soon.
