Well, it's the same old "if all else fails, read the instructions".  I
don't think that we are to blame if you prefer trying many other
methods before.

The Preview is for running preview-latex, not for starting a page
previewer.  preview-latex only previews selected material, like
$\sum_{\nu=0}^{n-1} k^\nu = (k^n-1)/(k-1)$ right in the buffer.

Use the Command/View or Command/Quick View entry to get an external
page previewer.

I recommend that you read the introductory sections of the
preview-latex manual (which is accessible from the Preview menu)
and/or AUCTeX (which is accessible from the LaTeX menu).

It's all very nice complaining about the dead ends you have been
taking because of ignoring the documentation delivered written by the
AUCTeX team, but there is not really much we can do about that.  It
won't help if we put "READ THE DOCUMENTATION!" in flaming red letters
into the documentation.
