Maybe the colors are not meant to look like that.  Judging from the
error messages you cited there are some problems with loading colors.

This is no release but a development snapshot.  Anyway, I don't know
if these issues are caused by this Emacs being compiled on Windows XP
and then run on Windows 98.  If it is not, it would make sense to
report such errors upstream with `M-x report-emacs-bug RET'.  It could
well be that nobody has noticed these things until now because nobody
uses Windows 9x anymore.  I remember that a development snapshot not
too long ago even failed to show the menu on Windows 9x.

Hm, looks like there are some problems with shell interaction.  Do you
get the same problems when doing something like `M-x shell RET'?
