It proves otherwise: The error appears also when I use the 2005-04-16 
Emacs snapshot from <http://www.crasseux.com/emacs/> /as is/ - without 
updated RefTeX. Even without AUCTeX installed. So for sure it's not 
related to AUCTeX.
